How Did the Stampede Happen?

The tragedy occurred on the early morning of January 29, 2025, when lakhs of pilgrims thronged to the Sangam, the holy confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and mythical Saraswati rivers, for the sacred Shahi Snan.

Most Important Reasons Behind the Incident:

1️⃣ Overcrowding: With the estimated 10 crore people visiting the Kumbh, the scenario at the principal ghats was out of hand. Security personnel found it difficult to handle the huge turnout.

2️⃣ Barricade Breach: The Times of India reports that a part of the temporary barricades gave way, causing panic among the devotees and an instant rush.

3️⃣ Rush and Confusion: Hindustan Times quoted that a sudden change in procession direction by some Akhadas resulted in devotees rushing forward, which created chaos.

4️⃣ Lack of Adequate Exit Routes: Witnesses informed NDTV that the exit pathways were too narrow, making it difficult for people to disperse safely.

Akhadas Postpone Shahi Snan to Basant Panchami

Post the tragedy, all 13 Akhadas, including Juna Akhada, Niranjani Akhada, Mahanirvani Akhada, Atal Akhada, and Avahan Akhada, together decided to reschedule todays Shahi Snan. The next royal bath will be held on Basant Panchami(February 3, 2025), a day that is regarded as extremely auspicious for Lord Shivas followers.

Why Was the Shahi Snan Delayed?

✅ Respect for the Deceased: In respect for the martyred devotees, the saints and Akhadas considered it befitting to forego celebrating instantly.

✅ Collective Decision: The decision was made collectively by the Akhil Bharatiya Akhada Parishad, the ruling body of Hindu monastic orders.
